What Can Unchecked Yeast Infections Lead To?

Although yeast infections are not extremely dangerous, if left untreated they can lead to complications such as irritable bowel and also 'leaky gut' syndrome. This is because as yeast feeds on the glucose in our bodies it releases toxic by-products that irritate sensitive mucus membranes in the gut, causing inflammation. This inflammation can make it difficult to digest food as normal, and waste products can build up causing toxins to be released back into the body. This taxes the liver and kidneys and can also lead to food allergies, celiac disease, arthritis and also a number of skin conditions.

Mild symptoms of yeast infections will often go away on their own, especially if you are generally healthy and eat a balanced diet. However if you have a low immune system, or are taking certain medications such as steroids or antibiotics then you will probably need to treat yeast infections with an anti-fungal medication to aid recovery.

Health & Personal Care

Severe cases of untreated yeast infections can lead to some more serious conditions such as sepsis. This is a system wide infection, which can overwhelm the immune system, causing blood clots that can be very dangerous if they block the flow of blood to any of the vital organs. If you are suffering from a severe yeast infection then you may also experience chronic digestive problems, urinary tract infections, extreme fatigue and even depression.

As well as taking anti-fungal medication to treat yeast infections you may also need to adjust your diet and lifestyle to aid recovery. Yeast feeds on glucose, so it can be beneficial to go on a short detoxifying diet and cut out as many types of glucose rich food as possible, including sugary treats, carbohydrates and saturated fats. Detoxification can cause some unpleasant side effects though such as sleeplessness, nausea, kidney pain and general fatigue. You should only carry out a detoxification diet for a fortnight at most, and then you should return to eating a healthy, balanced diet so that you can begin boosting your immune system again.

Yeast infections are a sign of overall low immunity and so to prevent infections reoccurring in the future you may have to make some significant improvements to your health and lifestyle. A balanced diet and regular exercise can boost your body's natural defenses and help keep yeast growth under control. A healthier attitude towards food can help prevent compulsions towards sugary, fatty foods that can encourage yeast to thrive and will also lead to an overall sense of physical and mental well being.
